Goodbye, Sophie Bunny

Well, it's been quite a (long) while now since my last post. What can I say? I've been busy! Today's post is off-topic, but its been a big part of the reason I've been away for so long (that and, you know, getting married). In all honesty, this post is really more for me...a chance to say goodbye to a beloved pet.

Sophie Bunny
Sophie bunny was born on October 1st, 2003 in Victoria, BC. At about 8 weeks old, Sophie and her sisters (triplets!) were sold to a pet store called Specht's (inside Hillside Mall).

K and I had been thinking about getting a rabbit for quite some time, and after quite a bit of research (excellent homework-procrastination tool!) I had a very specific picture in my head of what I wanted: a female, baby bunny (so we could train her), grey fur, floppy ears, and dwarf-sized.

On December 1st, 2003, I was walking through Hillside Mall when I saw her, sitting alone in her cage at the front of the pet store. My friend Z was with me, and was kind enough to wait as I confirmed with the store owner that she was, in fact, a she. They told me that her sisters had been adopted only days before by a family with two kids, but they didn't think they could keep three rabbits. They decided to leave Sophie behind, and come back for her if they decided they wanted a third. Hearing that she had been left all alone while her sisters found a home broke my heart. This little bunny was perfect! How could anyone leave her behind?

Sensing I was serious about adopting her, they allowed me to hold her and just like that, it was game over. I fell in love with a tiny, grey ball of fur.

Baby Sophie...about 9 weeks old.

I called K right away and told him I'd found our bunny. I expected he would be a bit apprehensive (the timing wasn't great for us, really), but he dropped everything and drove out to meet me right away. After seeing her and talking through the logistics of keeping a rabbit, we decided to go for it. "Packed" into a cardboard box for safe transportation, we walked our fur baby out of the mall and into the car...Sophie bunny was officially ours!

Sophie's early days at home with us (about 3 weeks) were spent (successfully) training her to use a litter box, playing in our living room, and her "sleeping" in a Rubbermaid bin we had set up as her home base. I use the term "sleeping" loosely, as I don't think K or I actually saw her truly sleep for the first few years. Mostly she'd just just kick her legs out to one side and chill as we'd get ready for bed. On more than one occasion we would wake up to find she had hopped out of the bin and decided to explore the bedroom, instead.

Sophie chillin' in her bin - about 10 weeks old.

As she got older (and bigger), we wanted to make sure she had enough space to play, and a chance to practice her litter box habits all day. While she couldn't have run of the whole house (after an incident with our roommates original Nintendo...sorry Z!), we were able to just "pen" her into one section during the day, with more free play when we were home in the evenings. We settled into the routine and Sophie thrived with both run around/cuddle time, and chill out time by herself.

Sophie, licking the bars of her pen :)

As time went by, we got to know each other. Sophie, as it turned out, had her own set of preferences (food dish on the left side of the pen, thank-you-very-much) and quirks (terrified of dust pans...but not vacuums), just like you would expect from a cat or dog. Also like a cat or a dog, Sophie loved to eat...a lot.

Caught sneaking into the food bag while my back was turned.

Pigging out on her 6th birthday...a feast!

I would wash and portion out her daily veggies on Sunday afternoons.

But despite her knack for turning vegetables into poop, Sophie was not a heavy bunny. In part this is thanks to the sizable "condo" she moved into - in which she could hop around and stand up to her heart's content - but also to her general comfort in playing outside. We had a number of adventures over the years, including the incredibly long walks we took to and from the mailbox (about 40 meters from home).

Walks usually started out like this...

...and ended up like this (sleepy bunny)!

Once we got to play in the snow! (This photo is affectionately called "Sno-phie")

But mostly we hung out in the backyard :) This is her washing her ears!

Sophie always surprised us. Did you know she loved having baths? She was always a happy camper when Kirk and I would wash her. Then she'd shake herself out, just like a dog!

Sophie's first bath :)

She loved to cuddle up, too...especially if she was cold.

Inside K's jacket on a snowy day.

What few people know is that Sophie was also very glamorous  Her condo consisted of purple carpet and pink accent pieces (food dish, litter box, etc...), and she had an extensive wardrobe (for a rabbit). When I mention her clothes, most people ask "Where do you buy rabbit clothes?!"   In fact, some very-small-dog clothes fit her (like, chihuahua size)...but I also hand sewed some for her, like the ballerina tutu and Tinkerbell Halloween costumes, below.

She also loved the camera :)

On October 1st, 2013, Sophie turned 9 years old. I was so excited to make her usual feast of special veggies and fruit (banana was her favorite), and everything looked fine as she happily chomped away.

Two days later, I let Sophie out of her condo and as she excitedly hopped over to say hello, I noticed she was moving strangely. As I watched her, it looked as if she was tripping over one of her back legs, which appeared to be moving lazily. She seemed happy as could be, and was eating and snuggling as usual. Still...it was weird. The next morning we were off to the vet for a check up.

Though nothing was found to be wrong with her leg, we did discover a bad ear infection which was (presumably) affecting her balance. Home we went with some antibiotics.

Over the next couple of days, Sophie's hopping/walking got worse, so she spent more and more time sitting. She would still hobble over to K and I when we were there, but she looked uncomfortable. We knew the antibiotics would take a while to work, but we were concerned as it also looked like she was struggling to breathe. Back to the vet we went.

After a good examination with the vet, some x-rays, and an ultrasound, we got the diagnosis. Congestive heart failure. There was nothing we could do but ease her pain and keep her comfortable until her time came.

Lots of snuggles...

...lots of tears.

On October 16th, I came home from work and Sophie looked terrible. She had lost weight as she wasn't interested in food, she was struggling to breathe, and worst of all, she looked like she was in pain. K and I made the difficult decision to put her down.

At the vet's office, Sophie was laying in her carrier, and we were spending our last few moments together when she reached her little face up and licked my cheek. I kissed her back, then held her as she passed away.

K and I buried her in her favorite spot in the backyard, and that's how I'll remember her...sunning herself on the lawn, relaxed, healthy, and happy.

Part of me would like to adopt a baby bunny again...but another part knows we would be hoping for the same personality in another rabbit. And the truth is, I don't think another rabbit could live up to her. She was truly one of a kind, and I miss her every day. I hope she feels the same.

I Need a Pintervention!

Oh Pinterest...I love you and I despise you. I love you because there is an ENDLESS supply of inspiration, and I hate you because I am so inspired by everything I see that I NEVER GET ANYTHING DONE!

It's a serious case of "The Never-Ending To-Do List."

That being said, it's still really fun to dream :) Here are some of the projects I've pinned recently and hope to get to... AFTER the wedding!

Scrabble tile coasters...cuz Kirk is a major Scrabble fan!

"Oscar" cookies for an Academy Award themed party!
These are from the Bakerella website.

Oyster cookies :) From the Disney Family Fun website.

A magnetic makeup board! GREAT idea! From the Laura Thoughts blog.

A "Game Boy" dress for Halloween! From the aptly named Creating Really Awesome Free Things (C.R.A.F.T.) blog :)

And last but not least...

Custom R2D2 Toms :) From a very talented seller named Kara on Etsy.

Well this has been a fun break from making a gazillion paper star lanterns. But the wedding is mere weeks away so I have to get back to it. Hope to post more soon, both before and after the wedding! We have one massive project on the go which is a surprise, so keep your eyes peeled for it soon!

Social Media Camp 2012

I know this is a bit off-topic today, but I wanted to post a couple photos from the awesome conference I'm at this weekend: Social Media Camp in Victoria!

Chris Brogan on stage delivering his keynote address.

Darth Fiddler on Government Street! (Favorite.Busker.Ever.)

The Empress Hotel (via Instagram) - I can feel the history in this photo!!

We didn't stay at the Empress, but it's so gorgeous I had to take some photos. We stayed at the beautiful Magnolia Hotel and I can't recommend it enough. Quiet, clean and great value. I'll be back for sure!

I wanted to make a quick mention of a contest that's going on here at Social Media Camp. I'm trying to win some money for Nanaimo Community Hospice . This is a contest run by a Victoria social media start up called TicTalking . (Check them out - it's an interesting way to connect with people around the globe who share your interests.) You can help me win the money for them by tweeting about this blog post and including the hashtag #TICgame (along with my handle, @ninjameg). Let's get Nanaimo Community Hospice an extra $2000 for their new hospice house project!

Alright, back to my session :) Cheers!

Shoes are DONE!

Life has been crazy lately, but I've got the day off today so it's time to update the blog with my big news. Yup - THE SHOES ARE DONE!! Check 'em out, in all their sparkly glory :)

And just for kicks, here's a flashback. From black patent leather...

...to glass slippers!

*SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*

I'm so, So, SO happy with how these turned out :) Tell me - do you think I have a future in shoe design? I'm actually thinking of making and selling more pairs. What's your honest opinion? Would you buy them?

Thanks again for reading... Meg :)

More photos...of the same shoe!

Not much to report recently, but I thought I'd write a quick update. The second batch of crystals arrived for my shoes today (yay!) so I will be gearing up to get to work on the second shoe shortly. Seeing as I have a dress fitting at the end of the month, it would be great to have this project done :) Not to mention...I can't wait to wear glittery heels all over the house! Here are some more photos (a bit self-indulgent, I know, but who cares!):

I feel like Cinderella already!

Close up!

A bit blurry, but still gorgeous!

How glamourous are these?! *eeeek!*

I also wanted to say thanks so much for all the kind comments on my shoe so far, both online and in person :) I am RIDICULOUSLY proud of this one, and it's nice to know ya'll think it's pretty awesome, too! I'll start working on (and posting about) the second shoe shortly.

OK, so besides the shoes, what's up next? More star lanterns...I've got about a million to finish, so I'll need to start working away on them soon. Though I think I might take a *small* detour and make some more bracelets soon. I'm thinking pearls might be nice for Mother's Day! I am beyond slow at making them though, so if you want to steal the idea and get your mom a pretty pearl wrap bracelet for Mother's Day (hint: THIS Sunday!) check out Taralicious Designs ... she has some awesome ones.

That's all for now! Cheerio :)

Shoe Update

I've finally had some more time to work on my shoes aaannnndd... ONE IS NOW COMPLETE!!! Check out the photos...

They even look amazing with jeans! *Happy dance!*

More sharing...just because I'm so damn proud!

Well underway...

Getting excited!

I love how the crystals reflect the light (like a disco ball!) in this picture. The photos REALLY don't do these justice. They sparkle like Edward Cullen in the SUN!

All together, the one shoe took about 6 hours of crystal time, on top of the painting and prep work. Without doing an exact tally, I would say there are about 3000 crystals on this shoe alone. Which means that I had to order some more crystals! Work on the next shoe will begin when they arrive. Can't wait!!

Paper Star Lanterns

Besides my shoes, one of the other big crafty-projects for our wedding this summer is the decorations. We decided right away that our "theme" would be magic, seeing as we've been performing magic together for almost a decade (and that he proposed during one of our shows!). While it's really "us" ... magic isn't a common wedding (or even party) theme. So we're going to have to create much of what we envision from scratch.

Our wedding reception will be in a local community centre that is quite pretty even without decorations. While we'll leave much of it alone, my one concern was that the ceilings are high enough that the room might look empty without some decor. So we decided to try "lowering" the ceiling with some glowing paper star lanterns, creating a bit more atmosphere. Imagine...a sparkling, twinkle-light canopy of stars...inside, no less!

Paper Star Lanterns - the inspiration

Turns out, it's not all that easy to find paper star lanterns. Either they are "Christmas Only" items, the wrong colours or sizes, or totally overpriced. So my mom said "Why don't you see if you can find a template and try making them yourself?" BINGO!

A quick Google search produced this website: Homemade Gifts Made Easy which had not only instructions on how to make paper star lanterns, but also a template! I quickly printed it out and made a prototype. While not exceptionally easy, it was do-able. So I set out to find some bigger coloured paper, and to make my own.

I popped into Michaels (I can't believe the people there don't know me by name yet...I'm in there at least twice a week!) and headed to their scrapbooking section. Lucky for me, their paper was on sale...5 for a dollar! Since I needed 5 sheets per star, this was a perfect deal. I grabbed a bunch of paper, a star shaped hole punch, and was on my way. Altogether I spent less than $20 to get the paper and hole punch for my stars. Score!

From there, the first (and extremely time consuming step) was cutting out the templates and folding them. I am beyond lucky to have had MAJOR help with this step. (And by major help I mean someone else did all of it!) Laura - you are amazing. THANK YOU!!

Template and one of the cut/folded papers

Each template makes one "cone" for the star, so you can see how much precise cutting and folding each took...times 5 per star...times 15 stars. Wow. Again, thanks Laura :)

The next step was to add the star punches before it was all glued together. Since everything had fold lines already, it was easier to get the punch in there. Just fold, and punch 2 stars at a time. See?

Fold and punch...

...then open sesame!

Basically you just keep folding and punching until you've got enough holes to shine the light through. Then you glue the cone together. Here's what mine looked like at this stage. Not bad!

It turns out that punching stars in the paper and gluing single cones together is the easy part. It gets more complicated (and frustrating) from here.

Once you've got 5 of these cones made, you start gluing (or taping) them together. The little tabs on the edges of the paper help, but the process is still really awkward. I wound up using a glue/tape combo to keep it all together.

Two together...

...then four...

And finally, all five!

Getting the fifth cone on there is a giant pain in the butt. If anyone else has done these and has a tip for simplifying, I would be forever grateful!!

One of the main appeals of the star project was the idea of lighting them to create a really "magical" atmosphere for the reception. After puzzling over twinkle lights and how to manage cords, I stumbled upon a solution. Wandering through the wedding section at (where else?) Michaels, I found these teeny, battery operated LED lights! PERFECT! On the day of the wedding, we'll drop these into the centre of the stars as we suspend them from the ceiling, giving them a pretty glow.

Battery operated LED light, with hook to thread the fishing wire through (off).

On...and very BRIGHT!!

A handy "side effect" of this project is that we're producing a TON of star shaped confetti. Next step...find something to do with all of it!

I'm happy with the project so far, but there is still tons to do :) Let me know what you think (and if you want to help!).
